Kidz With Leukemia: A Space Adventure (Degge Group: 888-301-0156, www.kidzwithleukemia)
This excellent CD-ROM, for Windows only, was published by The Degge Group, funded by the National Cancer Institute. It presents an informative, realistic, and positive description of Leukemia for children with Leukemia and their families and friends. Using games, puzzles, animation, and videos, it has three levels: for children 4-6 (no reading required), for children 7 and up, and for adults. It also has many different areas to visit. Facts are presented in all areas along the way, including information about blood, chemotherapy, ports and tubes, the body, etc. It has excellent activities that provide information about hospital stays, pharmacists, the medical team, feeling and emotions, coping with changes, living with the disease, how to help oneself, etc. There's a section for siblings of children with Leukemia, an Ask the Expert section, and parent reference information. If you know anyone with Leukemia, this is definitely a worthwhile program for them, their peers and their families. It can also be a useful resource for older students learning about health-related issues.
